June 13, 2020, The Liberacy:- Tamil names, in an order issued by the Tamil Nadu Government, will be submitted for 1018 cities, in order to correct the English spellings of the names. This will bring an amendment to the English spellings.
The main purpose of doing this to impress upon the “Tamil Phonetics” and make a correction to British pronunciation of the names. The British Indian Government corrupted many Tamil names in accordance with the comfortableness of pronunciation for them.
Tamil Nadu government has identified such 1018 cities and has proposed to change the spellings. This order of the state government will totally change the spelling but the meaning of it will remain the same.

- V.O.C Nagar – Va. Oo. Si Nagar
- Tondiarpet – Thandaiyaarpettai
- Purasawalkam – Purasaivaakkam
- Kodungaiyur – Kodungaiyoor
- Mylapore – Mayilaappoor
- Ekkattuthangal – Eekkattuthangal
- Sholinganallur – Solinganalloor
- Ambattur – Ambaththoor
- Egmore – Ezhumboor
- Guindy Park – Gindi Poonga (Poonga in Tamil means park)
- Thiruvottriyur – Thiruvotriyoor Firka
- Thirumulaivoyal – Thirumullaivaayal
- Tuticorin – Thooththukkudi
- Coimbatore – Koyampuththoor
- Puducherry – Puthucherry
- Vellore – Veeloor
- Budangudi – Boothangkudi
- Dharmapuri – Tharumapuri
- Gudalur – Koodaloor

The legal process of changing a name totally resides in the hands of the Indian Parliament. The state government sends the proposal of changing names of a city or town or even a railway station to the Union Home Ministry. The Union Home Ministry then considers the proposal with other concerned agencies. If the proposal is accepted, the approval is then sent to the state government and then on receiving such approval the state government issues a Gazette Notification.
In this case, the state government of Tamil Nadu already has approval from the Central Government. The changing of names of 1018 cities based on Tamil names was a long-looked project. It was first introduced in 2018 and then the cities to be renamed were identified by the Administration.
Many have criticised this decision amid the pandemic situation were earning bread costs a life. This decision will also incur the financial burden on the government as the signboards on roads and railway station has to be changed. It will also incur labour costs for doing the work.
Railways and Post Offices have showed their concern regarding the decision as they will be the most affected party in the complete scenario.
