What is Allium Negianum?


October 31, 2021, The Liberacy:- Allium Negianum is a plant discovered in 2019, and it is a genus that includes many staple foods such as Onion and Garlic.
This new species is described as “Phytokeys” and it is found in rare selective places around the world.

In India, Allium Negianum is found in the border area of Malari village in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, near the open grassy meadows, sandy soils along rivers and streams.

Allium Negianum is a new species described as “Phytokeys”

Allium Negianum grows 3000m to 4800m above sea level and is found along open grassy meadows, sandy soils along rivers, and streams forming in snowy pastured lands along alpine meadows.

The Melting snow helps carry its seeds to the most favorable area and due to this phenomenon, it is narrowly distributed in Western Himalayas in India and hasn’t been reported anywhere else in the world.

Allium Negianum derives its name in the honor of late DR. Kuldeep Singh Negi, an Allium Negianum expert, and collector.

The species, in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, was known to the local population for a long time, the Onions of Niti Valley are considered to be the best, in the minds of the local population and also in the local market.

Dr. Anjula Pandey, Principal Secretary of ICAR- National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources in New Delhi, along with Dr. K Madhu Rai, Dr. Pavan Kumar Malav, and Dr. S Rajkumar, in 2019 came across the details and in-depth study of the Onion species and made it known to the World.
