May 12, 2020, The Liberacy:- International Nurses Day is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.
It is organised by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), and every year ICN celebrates International Nurses Day with a theme.
This year’s theme is ‘Nursing the world to Health.’
This year’s International Nurses Day is special because this year is the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.
Also, under the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus Pandemic, the role of Nursing staff has become more crucial and has been rightly highlighted by WHO.
WHO reminded the importance of Nurses during the times of Covid19.
History of International Nurses Day.
Florence Nightingale was the first person who looked at the nursing profession through the glasses of respect and service and turned it into an organised sector. She designated and arranged proper roles and responsibilities to the Nursing staff. This was an unprecedented move to this new sector.
Florence Nightingale helped during the Crimean War of 1854. She brought with her 38 volunteer nurses to care for the soldiers wounded in the war. Before this, the wounded soldiers were the responsibility of their camp were their family members mostly took care of them, who were mostly untrained to treat an ill soldier.

Florence Nightingale is credited to revolutionise the modern nursing facility and to lay the foundation of the modern-day care and sanitation program.
To celebrate this day, the first proposal was forwarded by the US Department of Health. Officer named, Dorothy Sutherland, in the year 1953 made the proposal, which was very well received and appreciated by the then US President Dwight D Eisenhower.
After this, from the year 1965, 12th May is celebrated as International Nurses Day.
Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, the role of nurses around the globe has become very crucial and important. The recovery from Covid19 is possible only by proper care, as there is still no effective drug against the Virus.
There are even several cases of deaths of the medical workers and Nurses, who caught the virus while serving the affected Coronavirus patient.
This year will mark the selfless service of these nursing staff, and even the theme for 2020 is ‘Nursing the world to Health.’
