Osman Hadi Assassination Sparks Nationwide Unrest

Sharif Osman Hadi, the 27-year-old spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho, was shot in the head by motorcycle-borne assailants on December 12, 2025, in Dhaka’s Paltan area. After receiving treatment in Dhaka and being airlifted to Singapore General Hospital on December 15, Hadi succumbed to his injuries on December 18. His death triggered widespread violence across Bangladesh between December 18 and 20, with mobs attacking media offices, cultural institutions, and Indian diplomatic missions. Protesters set fire to the offices of Bangladesh’s largest newspapers, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, while the residence of founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was torched for the third time since 2024.

In response, Inquilab Moncho issued a stark ultimatum to the interim government, threatening to launch a movement to overthrow the administration if authorities fail to act decisively on the murder case. Bangladesh authorities launched a manhunt for two key suspects, offering a reward of five million taka (approximately $42,000) for information leading to their arrest.

Another NCP Leader Shot in Khulna

Adding to the crisis, Mohammad Motaleb Sikdar, a 42-year-old National Citizens Party labor wing leader, was shot near Gazi Medical College Hospital in Khulna on December 21. Initially feared dead from a head wound, medical reports revealed the bullet entered through his left ear and exited the other side. Police later determined the attack resulted from internal disputes rather than coordinated political violence.

Hindu Man Lynched Amid Rising Communal Violence after Osman Hadi kiling

On the same evening as Hadi’s death announcement, December 18, 2025, Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu factory worker, was lynched by a mob in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka area following allegations of blasphemy. Das was accused of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad during a World Arabic Language Day event at Pioneer Knit Composite Factory. Around 9:00 p.m., a mob attacked Das, beat him, hanged him from a tree, and set him on fire while chanting Islamic slogans.

However, subsequent investigations found no direct evidence that Das actually made any religious remarks, with officials suggesting the violence stemmed from workplace jealousy over a promotion. Despite the interim government condemning the lynching and the Rapid Action Battalion arresting seven individuals, Das’s father told NDTV the family received no direct government assurance.

Diplomatic Fallout with India

The violence has severely strained India-Bangladesh relations, with protesters attacking the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong. Allegations that Hadi’s killers fled to India sparked anti-India sentiment despite Bangladeshi authorities admitting they had no information about the suspects’ whereabouts. India temporarily closed visa centers in Rajshahi and Khulna while deploying massive security outside Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi.

The escalating violence raises serious questions about the interim government’s ability to maintain law and order ahead of February elections in a deeply polarized nation.
