Women’s security has been proved as a major issue when it comes to traveling and as every now and then there are reports of the complaints lodged by the passengers against the app-based taxi services, we still need to think on the safety in these radio taxis in India.
Many drivers of such app based taxis have been accused of harassment, misbehavior, and even sexual assault.
But the question is, who all are responsible for these acts?
Recently, Ambika Sharma Anavkar, a resident of Pune (Pashan).
She shared her worst experience while on an Uber ride from the airport to Pashan (Pune). It’s not the issue of how the cab driver provided the service but it was more of what happened after she left the cab.
Uber uses the phone number of its customers’ to register over its app to get the service and Ambika’s number was misused by an Uber driver named Sanjay. She reported it using micro-blogging site Twitter and also on facebook:
Dear #UberIndia,
On the 07th of May, I booked a cab from the airport to Pashan in Pune with you for a relative and her 2 boys! The driver seemed friendly and asked her where was she coming from and tried making small talks, to which she initially replied with politeness and later started ignoring. Now, this is what happens next. If this is not the beginning of harassment then what Is? I book my family with only Uber because so far I felt safe and secure with you’ll. But not anymore!!! When he said he was the driver I thought my cousin left something back in the cab and he is meaning to return it.. but this is what the truth was!!

Edited to add:
I got a call from uber saying that they are extremely sorry and that they will now suspend him. Said they picked my complain up from Twitter and will now speak to the driver and then write to me about the actions they’ve taken.
Uber while giving out their official statement their spokesperson said:-
“What’s been described has no place on the Uber app. We are investigating the matter and are in touch with the rider. The driver has been barred from using the app. Safety of our riders is a priority for us at Uber. We encourage riders to share feedback through the in-app support option, or in case of an emergency, they can use the SOS feature to receive immediate assistance. The 24/7 incident response team constantly monitors all feedback and takes action in real-time as appropriate, including off boarding the driver partner from the app.”
Uber’s quick response and actions are commendable, while on other hand there is lot to think how we are leading as a society.
