Tomato Flu: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Spread, and Treatment

Tomato Flu has started to spread among Humans, especially children. This is a Viral flu caused by the Coxsackie A16 virus. Fever from this virus is mild, although can become a big concern when caused by an Enterovirus.

Commonly found in Children between the age of 1 to 7. It was detected in the Kollam district of Kerala in India for the first time, in May 2022.

It has the potential to spread to neighboring states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Symptoms of Tomato Flu

  • Fever.
  • Sore Throat.
  • Cold.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Rashes (similar to Measles).
  • Blisters of rashes on Mouth, Tongue, Hands, and Feet.

In Tomato Flu, the first itchy scratch turns into patches of Red color, and in worse conditions, it turns into dark red blisters.

Diagnosis

Early detection of the virus causing the flu is extremely important, as in earlier studies it is found that the Enterovirus has far more severe consequences on humans.

Spread of Tomato Flu

Tomato Flu spreads rapidly, and an infected child just by the touch can carry the virus to others. It can also spread through droplets when children cough, laugh or speak.
The disease is most contagious when it is in its first week.

Treatment for Tomato Flu

The flu usually disappears in 7 to 10 days, after the initial first week, also called the ‘Most Contagious’ week is over. But, post-flu care is important, as an infected body tends to dehydrate faster, and lowers the immunity of the body.

A patient infected with the virus to take more fluids, and the treatment should be focused.
This means, that if there is a fever, one should take medicine for fever, and if there is vomiting, one to take medicines for vomits.
