First Death Sentence Under POCSO

Bhubaneswar, July 30, 2019, The Liberacy:- POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, was adopted in order to protect the minors from sexual abuse and sexual exploitation, as there were many rising instances of sexual abuse, mainly targeting minor girls. POCSO helped in fast resolving and protecting children from these heinous crimes.

On Friday, a special court in Odisha gave death sentence to a 22-year old man for raping and murdering a 13-year-old, minor girl. This was the very first instance of the death penalty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO).

This case of rape and murder by a 22-year old man occurred early this year, in January in Odisha’s Angul district. However, the death sentence will be in effect after confirmation from the High Court.

The 13-year old girl was attacked and raped by the man after dragging to the forest where he murdered the girl.
The POCSO Act was adopted in 2012, in order to protect children from sexual abuse and child pornography.

The Ministry of Women and Children Development campaigned after its amendment in 2012, which includes any child below the age of eighteen and ensures the best health and benefits of the child.
The Act also defines the various forms of abuse and has punishments accordingly.
