Canadian Graves: A Dirge of Catholic Church

July 04, 2021, The Liberacy:- Canadian Graves of British Columbia and Western Saskatchewan of Canada portrays an uglier version of the Holocaust that existed even before Adolf Hitler was born, and it was carried under the administration of the Roman Catholic Church in Canada.

By the end of June 2021, a shame landed on the faces of the Canadian past and on the whole of the existence of the Catholic Church, as nearly 1000 unmarked graves of children were found near the residential schools of Indigenous people of Canada.

The indigenous Canadian children buried in the graves are estimated to be around the age of 15 to 17 and in the number between 8000 to 30,000.

The Canadian Residential School System was a 19th-century school arrangement for the people of Canada belonging to indigenous groups, mainly Inuit and Metis, and the objective of these schools was to take these children out from the influence of their own culture and follow the Canadian culture, which they called as “Civilized” with the help of Catholic Church.
It lasted for 100 years, till 1930.

In the span of 100 years, it is believed that around 150,000 children were enrolled in 139 such residential schools run by Roman Catholic Missionary congregations and completely funded by the Canadian Government.
Out of 150,000 children enrolled, it is believed that around 30,000 children might have died and another report suggested that 4000 children might have died of disease or neglect.

The children enrolled in these residential schools were physically abused and sexually targeted by headmasters and teachers, who forced them to leave their indigenous culture and language and follow the “New Path.”

Out of the graves found, 182 were in British Columbia, 751 near a school in Marieval in Western Saskatchewan Province, and another 215 graves were found in a school in Kamloops of British Columbia.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a statement, called this incident a “Historical Failure of the Country.”
He said that he personally spoke to the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, and explained to him that, how important it was for him to deliver a public apology on the whole situation.

The Canadian flag was flown half-mast over Peace Tower in Ottawa and on the Central Tower of the Quebec National Assembly.

All over Canada, the statues of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth were toppled and posters burned to mark people’s anger on the death of thousands of children and the same act of vandalism was faced by the Church locally, as many Churches were burned down in Canada.
The July 1st celebration of Canada was canceled in many places with the hashtag #CancelCanadaDay trending.

Queen Victoria served the longest, during the period the genocide is believed to have taken place and she resigned in 1901, only to be replaced by Queen Elizabeth.
The crowd cheered as the statues fell to the ground.

The British Government said that it condemns any act of defacing the statue of the queens.

“Our thoughts are with Canada’s Indigenous community following these tragic discoveries, and we follow these issues closely and continue to engage with the Government of Canada on indigenous matters,” said a spokesperson of Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
