National Green Tribunal to hear a petition filed by the Farmers of Chittoor


July 05, 2021, The Liberacy:- National Green Tribunal on Monday accepted a petition filed by the farmers of Chittoor, a district of Andhra Pradesh, in relation to several works of the Rayalaseema Irrigation Project.

The farmers in the petition alleged that on various works of the projects, no environmental clearance was obtained and it has affected the areas around it. The farmers while filing the petition, also said that they have moved to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) as the Andhra Pradesh Government did not listen to their problems.

The Petition was filed on June 27, 2021.

The projects in hearing are Galeru Nagari Project and Handri Sujala Sravanthi Project, with the main regard to several “Lift Irrigation” schemes, that has not obtained prior Environmental Clearance.
The estimated cost of the projects is ₹5,139 crores.

The petition was filed on June 27, 2021, by 13 farmers of Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh and they are, Gutha Gunasekhar, Gunturi Chandrababu, Sannapaneni Yadava Naidu, S Lepakshi Naidu, Banala Chandrachari, Sompalli Lakshmipati Naidu, Gutha Sundaraiah Naidu, Gutha Kesavula Naidu, Sompalli Changalraya Naidu, Sannapaneni Vasudeva Naidu,  J Chinnikrishnama Naidu, and  Gutha Chandrasekhar Naidu.

The farmers also said that the project works were started even when their suggestions were outlaid and alternative studies were taken and that the contractors have also damaged the structure around Seetamma lake of Avulapalli without in care of the nearby crops.
The contractors have also damaged a nearby temple which is about 500-year-old, as claimed by the locals.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) heard the petition through a video conference.

Governing YSR government’s Ministers are seeing this as a political battle by naming the opposition for the filed petition and claimed that the petitioners of the case are TDP supporters and they are trying to stall the development projects of the state.
